How to get to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen?

Playa del Carmen, or colloquially called just Playa, is a small city located about 70 km away from Cancun, that can be translated into a 1-hour trip from one city to another. Playa, just as Cancun and Isla Mujeres, is one of the most visited places of the whole Riviera Maya because of its beaches, night clubs and its 5th avenue, still, is not very usual that tourists and visitors stay only at one place, and why should they if everything is so close and it is very easy to move from one place to another! If you are currently staying in Playa del Carmen and are wishing to discover all the wonders that Isla Mujeres has to offer you then you came to the right place, here we will tell you how to get to Isla Mujeres from Playa del Carmen.

What options do I have?

On our previous article about How to get from Cancun Airport to Isla Mujeres we talked about what options are available to move from there, well, you won’t find much of a difference if you are traveling from Playa del Carmen and that makes it very easy; you can either rent a car, a private transportation service, take a taxi, a bus or a van, it doesn’t matter which option you choose, you have to get to Cancun first and then to take a ferry, don’t worry, we will explain you this bellow.

First, you need to decide, based on your needs, how you and the ones who come with you want to move:

Renting a car:

This may be the best option for you if you want to travel at your own time, if you are carrying lots of things with you or if you are planning to cross to the island with the car, because yes, that is possible and might be convenient for you if you want to discover the island.

You will find different car rentals along the Riviera Maya and that includes Playa del Carmen; the prices will vary but they can go from 200 Mexican pesos per day to $2000 depending on the size of the car and its model.

Once you decide which car you want to rent, it will be time to drive and the road to follow is very easy, you just have to find the 50 South Avenue or 50 Avenida Sur in which you will see a big bridge, then turn to Cancun’s direction! The road is a straight line and you don’t have to worry about deviations, you just have to make sure that, once you are out of Playa del Carmen, you will pass two more bridges; the one from Puerto Morelos and the last one from Moon Palace Hotel. After that, you will pass the airport and that will mean you are now in Cancun.

What you have to do next is to go straight to the ferry station of your preference; if you don’t mind leaving the car you can go to Playa Tortugas Station or Playa Caracol Station (both in the Hotel Zone) or the one in Puerto Juarez. If, on the other hand, you want to cross with the car the only option is to go to the Punta Sam Station.

Other options downtown Playa del Carmen

Another good option, if you don’t want to drive or you have a tight budget, is to go to the beginning of the 5th avenue, close to the church. Here you will find the ADO Bus Station where you will be able to take a bus for not more than 100 Mexican pesos, and also, next to the bus station you will see some vans and taxis that can also take you to Cancún.
