Have you heard about the Underwater Art Museum? In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the world’s largest man-made museum, with its motto “The Art of Conservation“.
This incredible project was born in 2009 by Dr. Gonzalez Cano and Roberto Diaz, with the idea of creating an underwater art gallery that houses the diversity of marine flora and fauna and allowing visiting tourists to admire this beauty.
Its main objective is to reduce tourist visits to natural corals, raise awareness of their conservation and support the regeneration of affected reefs.
It is located between Isla Mujeres, Punta Nizuc and Cancun. The works of art are distributed in 3 main galleries:
Punta Nizuc:
This museum has more than 500 sculptures and its main works are the muse of the ocean, bankers, blessings, silent evolution, understanding and bacab. It is one of the most spectacular attractions for snorkeling and diving in the Mexican Caribbean, or take the glass-bottom barcode tour for the works without having to dive into the water.
The main author of these works is Jason deCaires Taylor, British sculptor and photographer, followed by Karen Salinas Martínez, Salvador Quiroz Ennis and Rodrigo Reyes.
All the sculptures found at MUSA were made with sustainable materials that benefit and help coral growth.
In addition, each of these works has perforations of different sizes to attract different fish. In their flat openings, crustaceans live and in the small cavities, fish live.
